Detailed architectural plans for the expansion of the White House East Wing have been unveiled, revealing a grand vision for the iconic building. The Washington DC advisory committee, the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), has released comprehensive drawings, including stunning renders of the expanded ballroom.
These drawings, prepared by Shalom Baranes Associates, provide an in-depth look at the proposed changes. The site plans, building layouts, and landscape designs showcase a significant expansion, with the new East Wing occupying approximately 90,000 square feet, more than double the size of the previous structure. And this is where it gets controversial—the expansion encroaches onto the White House lawn, a decision that has sparked debate.
The neoclassical design features Corinthian columns and two grand porticos, adding a touch of elegance. The second storey, housing the ballroom, boasts expansive arched windows, while the lower level has smaller rectangular windows. The grand entrance, accessed via a staircase along the colonnade, leads to a beautifully landscaped area with a Mount Vernon brick pathway.
The Trump administration has justified the expansion by emphasizing the need for additional space to accommodate events and visiting dignitaries. However, the project has faced legal challenges, with the National Trust for Historic Preservation arguing that construction began without the necessary authorizations. Interestingly, the White House is exempt from the National Historic Preservation Act, which typically governs projects on federal sites of historical importance.
The NCPC received the latest plans on February 11, ahead of a scheduled review meeting on March 5. The project has already undergone an environmental review by the National Parks Service, which deemed the impacts adverse but not significant. And this is the part most people miss—the architectural community has also voiced concerns, questioning the project's adherence to ethical standards.
