Wood Seals Second as Formula Regional Title Contenders Falter
Ugochukwu, starting from pole position, led the race with Ryan Wood in tow at the first turn.
The race's opening lap was marred by a collision between Freddie Slater and Kanato Le as they exited the Brickyard, causing the Safety Car to be deployed.
The race resumed on Lap 7, with Ugochukwu quickly pulling away from Wood to establish a commanding lead.
On Lap 14, the Safety Car was called out again due to Trevor LaTourrette's spin and crash at Turn 1.
Just as the green flag waved for the Lap 20 restart, Jin Nakamura slid off the road at the final turn, setting up a one-lap sprint to the finish.
Ugochukwu maintained his lead and won by a margin of 1.698 seconds, claiming his third victory of the season.
Wood secured second place, while Cooper Shipman impressed with a third-place finish, scoring his first podium of the season.
Australia's Jack Taylor finished fourth, narrowly beaten by Shipman during the penultimate restart, and Kalle Rovanpera was fifth.
Ugochukwu extended his points lead, while Wood climbed from fifth to second.
Ugochukwu expressed his satisfaction with the lead, stating, 'I was very comfortable in the lead. The pace was strong. I just needed to manage the Safety Car restarts and then I could pull away.'
He continued, 'Overall, I pushed hard to get the fastest lap, as that's where we start for Race 3. Every lap, I aimed to go as quick as possible.'
Ugochukwu's main rivals entering Race 2 were Le, Nakamura, and Slater, all of whom faced issues during the race.
He voiced his frustration over Le and Slater's re-entry into the race, questioning their ability to rejoin after the marshals touched their cars.
The fastest combined times from Race 1 and Race 2 determined the grid for Race 3.
Race 2 of the Teretonga weekend was postponed to Sunday morning due to bad weather, while Race 3 is scheduled to take place at Highlands.
Ugochukwu commented, 'Unfortunately, a few people crashed on the first lap and were allowed to rejoin with lower pressures, making them quite fast. I'm unsure how they were permitted to continue after the marshals touched their cars. The same issue occurred during qualifying.
'Despite the challenges, Ugochukwu expressed his happiness with the win, stating, 'I managed to regain several points and believe we've positioned ourselves well for Race 3 at Highlands.'
Race 4, the Spirit of a Nation, is set to commence at 2:26 pm AEDT.
