The board includes some well-known figures: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law. Trump himself will chair the board, as outlined in his October plan.
However, this move has sparked criticism and raised concerns among rights experts and advocates. They argue that Trump's oversight of a foreign territory's governance resembles a colonial structure, a notion that is further reinforced by the involvement of Tony Blair, given his role in the Iraq war and Britain's imperialist history in the Middle East.
The White House has not provided details on the specific roles of each board member, but it has confirmed that more members will be announced soon. The current list does not include any Palestinians, which has also drawn attention and questions about the board's representativeness.
The board will also include private equity executive Marc Rowan, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and Trump adviser Robert Gabriel. Additionally, Nickolay Mladenov, a former U.N. Middle East envoy, will serve as the high representative for Gaza.
Furthermore, the White House has appointed an 11-member "Gaza Executive Board" to support Mladenov's office and the Palestinian technocratic body. This additional board includes Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, UN special coordinator Sigrid Kaag, and others.
The situation in Gaza remains fragile, with accusations of ceasefire violations from both Israel and Hamas. The assault on Gaza since 2023 has resulted in devastating consequences, with tens of thousands of lives lost, a hunger crisis, and the entire population of Gaza internally displaced. Multiple rights experts, scholars, and a UN inquiry have labeled these actions as genocide. Israel, on the other hand, claims its actions were in self-defense following a Hamas-led attack in late 2023.
