A shocking accusation has been leveled against the Trump administration, with union leaders claiming a disturbing shift towards white supremacy. The evidence? A series of social media posts by the US Department of Labor that bear an uncanny resemblance to Nazi slogans.
One particular post, a video with the caption "Remember who you are, American", features the phrase "One Homeland. One People. One Heritage." This has sparked comparisons to the infamous Nazi slogan "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer" ("one people, one realm, one leader").
Christopher Hayes, a labor historian and professor, expressed his alarm, stating, "The similarity to that Nazi slogan is bad. It's not just the words; it's the motivation, the message, and the desired outcome that are concerning."
Jimmy Williams Jr., general president of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, highlighted a pattern of far-right imagery in the department's online presence: "When people tell you who they are, believe them."
Puneet Maharaj, executive director of National Nurses United, the largest nurses' union in the US, added, "It's disturbing to see a fascist regime post fascist propaganda on a social media network like X. The DOL's posts serve a fascist, white supremacist agenda, and that's a real concern."
But here's where it gets controversial... The Department of Labor, when approached for comment, denied any specific rhetoric, stating that the social media campaign was merely a celebration of American workers and the American Dream.
The campaign has sparked widespread criticism and alarm, not just from historians and labor movement leaders but also from workers within the agency itself.
"The point is to demonize the foreign worker and convince the white working class that they are the real Americans," Hayes explained. "It's a dangerous narrative that erases others and echoes the tactics of the Nazis."
Under Trump, the labor department has also published AI-generated artwork depicting only white male workers, further fueling concerns. Other posts decry "globalism" and make misleading claims about job gains going exclusively to "native-born" Americans.
Maharaj believes these posts are part of a broader shift towards white supremacy across federal departments under the Trump administration.
"The use of federal departments for propaganda is harmful to working people and benefits billionaires, regardless of immigration status. There's no stronger condemnation for this abuse of power."
Williams Jr. draws a clear connection between the administration's imagery and its actions, citing the recent killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis as an example of their violent behavior.
Inside the labor department, the rhetoric has caused consternation. An anonymous employee described the social media activity as "radical and ideological," fearing it undermines trust in the agency.
"Fear reduces reporting and cooperation, harming workers and weakening the agency's mission," they said.
A former labor department staffer, also speaking anonymously, described the rhetoric as "disturbing" and reminiscent of a "whites-only era." They recognized the decrying of "globalism" as an antisemitic dog whistle.
Another former official lamented the change in the department's social media presence, saying it has devolved from a source of important information developed by experts to a platform for AI-generated content with little substance.
