The fate of the Gilas Pilipinas' journey to the 2027 FIBA World Cup hinges on a single, crucial factor: winning against Guam. This isn't just a game; it's a make-or-break situation, according to coach Tim Cone. He understands that securing victories in both the away and home games against Guam in the upcoming Asian Qualifiers is absolutely essential for the Philippines' aspirations in the world championship.
"If we don't win these two games, our goals are shattered," Cone emphasized, highlighting the high stakes. The national team is set to face Guam on Friday, November 28th, with a home game scheduled for December 1st at the Blue Eagle gym in Ateneo.
Coach Cone is well aware of the challenges. Guam, with players like San Miguel Beer veteran Jericho Cruz, along with Jonathan Galloway and Tai Wesley, is a formidable opponent. But here's where it gets controversial: the Philippines is grouped with basketball powerhouses like Australia and New Zealand. Cone stated that failing to overcome Guam could mean missing out on the third spot needed to advance to the second round, especially considering the tough competition.
"These two games are the most important games we'll play in the entire qualifiers," Cone stated during the team's sendoff on Monday.
The team has been bolstered by the addition of Ginebra sophomore guard RJ Abarrientos and former University of the Philippines big man Quentin Millora-Brown to the final 12. Abarrientos, who has played under Cone for over a year at Ginebra, has a clear advantage. Millora-Brown is expected to fill the void left by Kai Sotto, who is recovering from an ACL injury.
And this is the part most people miss: The tournament format allows the top three teams from each of the four groups to progress to the second round. Then, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six. The top three teams from each second-round group, along with host nation Qatar and the best fourth-placed team, will earn their spots in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, scheduled from August 27 to September 12. The Philippines has a history in the World Cup, having participated since 2014.
