The Tigers' Strategic Roster Moves: Protecting Talent and Managing the Rule 5 Draft
The Detroit Tigers have made strategic decisions to safeguard their talent ahead of the December 10 Rule 5 draft at MLB's Winter Meetings. They've taken a comprehensive approach to protect a wide range of players, ensuring they don't lose any valuable assets.
The Tigers added Thayron Liranzo, a highly-rated catcher and fifth-ranked prospect, and Hao-Yu Lee, a sixth-ranked infielder, to their roster. These additions were straightforward choices. They also protected Jake Miller, a 19th-ranked left-handed pitcher, who would have been a higher pick if not for injuries. Cruz, a versatile defender, can handle any position and has strong throwing skills. He lacks power and in-game threat but is a pesky batter and good baserunner, providing insurance for the Tigers. Miller, a hybrid reliever, has advanced command, a good changeup, and a solid fastball and breaking ball. He hasn't faced Triple-A yet but is likely to help the Tigers next summer if healthy.
Liranzo, a young switch-hitting catcher, and Lee, a likely 2026 option who mashes lefties and can handle second and third base, are still developing. The Tigers aim to improve their game against breaking and offspeed stuff.
