This exciting new chapter of Hadestown kicked off in October 2024 at the Palace Theatre in Waterbury, Connecticut, and it is currently captivating audiences at Virginia's Berglund Center. Written by the gifted singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, Hadestown was recognized as the standout production of the Broadway season from 2018 to 2019, sweeping eight Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, along with the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It also garnered four Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, and the prestigious Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Musical. Fans can still experience its magic on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
At the heart of Hadestown are two intertwined love stories: the passionate yet tragic romance between young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the complex relationship of King Hades and his wife Persephone. This musical invites audiences to embark on an unforgettable journey from the depths of the underworld and back, exploring themes of love, hope, and sacrifice.
The direction of the new tour by Keenan Tyler Oliphant is rooted in the original Broadway approach while showcasing innovative concepts devised by Chavkin. The choreography, created by T. Oliver Reid, pays homage to the original work of David Neumann. The visual experience is further enhanced by set design from David L. Arsenault, which is inspired by Rachel Hauck's original design, alongside costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Aja Jackson, and sound design contributions from Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz. Music consulting and vocal arrangements are provided by Liam Robinson, with music supervision led by Cody Owen Stine, and casting handled by Whitley Theatrical.
Supporting the production is a dedicated team that includes Sightline Productions as the production supervisor and RCI Theatricals overseeing general management, with Mark Lunsford serving as the creative producer.
It's worth noting that the inaugural tour of Hadestown commenced in October 2021, marking a significant return to live theater in the wake of the pandemic. By the time this tour concludes in May 2024, it will have showcased over 980 performances across 85 cities throughout the United States and Canada.
Hadestown was originally developed with support from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and further refined by The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, co-conceived by Ben T. Matchstick.
