Ayrshire residents, take note! Your local pharmacies are stepping up to ensure your health needs are met over the New Year's holiday. With GP practices closed on January 1st and 2nd, 2026, NHS Ayrshire & Arran is encouraging people to utilize the services of community pharmacies for common health concerns.
But here's the catch: not all pharmacies will be open during this period. NHS 24 is ready to assist with medicine and pharmacy-related queries over the phone, and their website offers valuable tips on winter health preparation. However, for those who prefer face-to-face interactions, a select few community pharmacies will be available to provide advice and treatment for everyday ailments.
Roisin Kavanagh, Director of Pharmacy, advises residents to stock up on essential medicines for common illnesses. This includes having paracetamol, sore throat remedies, and cough syrups readily available. But don't overdo it! Only order what you need for the holiday weekend, and be mindful of your local GP and pharmacy opening hours, as well as prescription processing times, which can take up to seven days.
The Pharmacy First service offers a wide range of treatments, including medication prescriptions, treatment for urinary tract infections in women aged 16 and above, impetigo, skin infections, and shingles for eligible patients. Many community pharmacies also provide repeat prescriptions, emergency contraception, nicotine replacement therapy for smokers, and even a private space for sensitive discussions.
Now, for the pharmacy opening hours over the holiday period: on December 31st, 2025, most pharmacies will be open as usual, except for a few early closures at 5:30 pm. On New Year's Day, only a handful of pharmacies will be open for limited hours, and the same goes for January 2nd. It's crucial to plan ahead and know which pharmacies are open and when.
