The Power of Fan Engagement: MLB Teams Keep Fans Engaged with Winter Fan Fests

In the world of Major League Baseball, winter fan conventions are more than just events; they are a strategic move to keep the passion alive during the offseason. The Chicago Cubs, pioneers in this arena, have been hosting their annual fan convention since 1986, and it's a testament to the power of community building.

This year's Cubs Convention, held from January 16th to 18th, was a record-breaker. With the addition of star players Alex Bregman and Edward Cabrera, and celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of their World Series win and the team's 150th anniversary, the event sold more passes than ever before. General admission passes, priced at $125, attracted over 8,200 fans, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Cubs Charities.

"This isn't about revenue; it's about our brand and our fans," said Jennifer Martindale, the Cubs' Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications. "We want to keep the Cubs at the forefront of our fans' minds during the offseason, build community, and raise funds for charity."

Martindale emphasized that the event caters to die-hard fans, with about 30% of attendees being season-ticket holders. This level of engagement is a key reason why fan conventions have become a staple for 17 MLB teams during the offseason.

But here's where it gets controversial: despite the positive intentions, fan sentiment isn't always rosy. Some fans express their dissatisfaction through boos directed at team management. Nevertheless, these events offer fans a unique opportunity to interact with their favorite players, participate in sponsor activities, and create lasting memories, sometimes at an additional cost.

For teams like the Atlanta Braves, these fan fests are an opportunity to showcase their state-of-the-art campus, Truist Park, and The Battery. Unfortunately, this year's Braves Fest, scheduled for January 31st, was canceled due to bad weather, leaving fans disappointed. Adam Zimmerman, Atlanta's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Content, highlighted the importance of these events: "It's about giving fans a chance to live their dreams, whether it's stepping onto the field or getting up close and personal with a player."

The Miami Marlins, coming off a strong second half in their 79-83 campaign, are also leveraging fan fests to generate excitement. Their upcoming Marlins FanFest on February 7th has seen almost 35,000 free tickets claimed, with the team set to unveil a new jersey for Sunday home games and induct a new class into their Marlins Legends Hall of Fame.

"There's a real sense of optimism and enthusiasm within the organization," said Robert Gelman, Miami's Vice President of Partnerships. Gelman added that the team will evaluate the success of the event based on attendance, fan feedback, player enjoyment, and sponsor satisfaction.

As we head into April, the Cubs will analyze post-event surveys and begin planning for Cubs Con '27. It's a testament to the importance these teams place on fan engagement and community building.
