Jonathan the tortoise, the ancient reptile who was mistakenly declared dead on April Fools' Day, is not only still alive but has earned a prestigious title as a Guinness World Records Icon. Born before 1832, Jonathan is at least 194 years old, making him the oldest living land animal. His age is a conservative estimate, as the average life expectancy of his species is 150 years. Jonathan was brought to the South Atlantic island of St. Helena in 1882, where he has lived on the grounds of the governor's residence, the Plantation House mansion.
