Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge 2025: Win Up to $100,000 for AI in News! (2025)

Are you ready to revolutionize journalism with AI? The Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge 2025 is here, offering a golden opportunity for news publishers to harness the power of artificial intelligence. But here's where it gets exciting: this isn't just about technology—it's about transforming how we understand audiences and drive revenue growth. With grants of up to $100,000, this program is a game-changer for small and medium-sized news organizations. However, this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about funding; it’s about collaboration, innovation, and sharing insights to shape the future of journalism.

The JournalismAI Innovation Challenge, backed by the Google News Initiative, is a nine-month program designed to foster AI literacy and implementation through targeted experimentation. Crafted by the JournalismAI team—an initiative of Polis, the journalism think-tank at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)—this program builds on the success of its first cohort. This year, up to 12 news organizations will be selected to explore how AI can enhance audience intelligence and boost revenue growth. And this is where it gets controversial: while AI tools for newsgathering, fact-checking, and misinformation detection are vital, this challenge specifically excludes them. Instead, it focuses on leveraging AI for business growth and audience engagement. Why? Because this is the untapped potential of AI in journalism—and it’s sparking debates about where the industry should prioritize its efforts.

Grant Details

Grants will be awarded as follows:
- 8 ideas will receive $50,000 each.
- 4 ideas will receive $100,000 each.

Who Can Apply?

Here’s the catch: not everyone qualifies. To be eligible, you must:
- Be a small or medium-sized news publisher (10-200 personnel) already experimenting with AI.
- Have a verifiable digital presence (e.g., a website focused on journalistic content) and have been active for at least 12 months.
- Be able to launch, implement, and measure the impact of the grant within nine months.
- Not focus on reporting, storytelling, or creating tools for newsgathering, fact-checking, or misinformation detection.
- Be willing to collaborate openly with other grantees and share business insights.
- Operate in eligible countries, including the Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, United States, and Latin America.

Controversial Interpretation Alert: Some argue that excluding fact-checking and misinformation detection from this challenge undermines AI’s role in combating disinformation. What do you think?
