In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, high up at an altitude of over 9,000 feet, lies a unique set of dinosaur tracks. These tracks, preserved in sandstone, tell a story of a sauropod's journey, a story that scientists are now unraveling.
The study, led by Anthony Romilio from the University of Queensland's Dinosaur Lab, focused on a remarkable feature of these tracks - a complete looping turn. Using drone imaging and 3D modeling, the team analyzed over 300 feet of these ancient footprints, uncovering some intriguing details.

The footprint patterns suggest that this dinosaur might have been walking with a limp. Romilio notes, "Within that loop, we found subtle yet consistent clues to its behavior. One of the clearest patterns was a variation in the width between left and right footprints, shifting from narrow to wide."
This shift in footprint width, along with a small difference in step lengths, could indicate an unusual gait. "Whether that reflects a limp or simply a preference for one side is hard to say," Romilio adds.
The study, published in the journal Geomatics, offers a unique opportunity to understand how these giant dinosaurs navigated tight turns. It also highlights the potential for similar studies on other long dinosaur trackways around the world.
