A concerning trend has emerged in Bradford, where school swimming lessons have taken a significant hit. The decline is so drastic that it's almost unrecognizable from the district's proud history of swimming education.
According to a Bradford Council report, the number of school swim sessions in local authority pools has halved, dropping from 120 in the 2023/24 financial year to a mere 62 currently. This is a shocking revelation, especially considering Bradford's pioneering role in school swimming, with Wapping School boasting the country's first school pool back in 1898.
Councillor Jeanette Sunderland has raised the alarm, describing the situation as "unsatisfactory in terms of life skills." She emphasizes that Bradford, the birthplace of school swimming, is now being strangled by bureaucracy.
The report highlights the negative impact of high transport costs on the KS2 school swimming program, with 15 primary schools opting for pop-up pools in 2023-2025 as a cost-saving measure. This trend continued in 2025-2026, resulting in the loss of an additional 15 primary schools from the program.
The reduction in lessons has left the district's swimming program with significant gaps and a loss of crucial income for leisure facilities. The aquatics service is concerned that this could further impact footfall to leisure centers.
While schools have the option to arrange their own transport or utilize the Bradford Aquatics transport service via the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), the report calls for an urgent review of transport costs agreed upon with WYCA.
Ms. Sunderland emphasizes that pop-up pools are no substitute for learning in an official swimming pool. She advocates for increased investment in school swimming and transport to pools, stating, "It seems like we know the cost of everything and the value of nothing." She adds, "If you don't learn to swim as a child, very few adults ever start."
