The Deftones' album 'Around the Fur' features a provocative image of a young woman in a jacuzzi, shot from a bizarre top-down, up-close perspective with a fisheye lens. In a new video feature, Jenkem magazine uncovers the lore behind the sleeve image and its bikini-clad subject, Lisa Hughes, tracking down the present-day Hughes and the photographer behind the shot, Rick Kosick.
Kosick recalls being invited to shoot photos during the recording of 'Around the Fur' in Seattle. There was no pressure to produce an album cover shot, only 'go there and have fun, hang out, shoot photos.' Kosick said, 'They were kind of in their party phase stage of the band, and so we went back to their condo that they rented during the recording of this record, and there was this girl hanging out in the jacuzzi.'
A few weeks later, Kosick got a call from the label, and the art director Kevin Reagan showed him the album cover. Kosick was blown away, saying, 'This is so cool looking. This looks incredible.' Hughes, the subject of the photo, also cleared up misconceptions surrounding the image, such as her being a groupie.
She said, 'I found those articles about me being a groupie and this and that. I started a little page about myself so people know I'm Lisa, just an awesome chick from Auburn who likes to have fun. There's no groupie action going on here.' She added, 'It's a pretty cool-looking shot with the fisheye lens looking down. It's a bit risqué with my breasts, but I don't care. I'm a human being, not a model. It's just cool-looking.'
