The Gunners are already leading the league with 14 goals from set-pieces this season. However, they haven't yet capitalized on throw-ins to score. Gronnemark, who will be working with Arsenal part-time, aims to change that.
But here's where it gets interesting... Gronnemark's track record is impressive. He previously worked with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool from 2018 to 2023 and consulted for Brentford. During his time at Liverpool, the team's possession from throw-ins dramatically improved, jumping from 45.4% to 68.4%. This propelled them from 18th to 1st in the league in this metric. And this is the part most people miss: Brentford has scored 9 goals from throw-ins since last season, the most in the Premier League. In contrast, Arsenal hasn't scored a single goal from throw-ins during that same period.
Declan Rice has been designated as Arsenal's long-throw taker. This season, we're seeing teams increasingly use long throws to launch the ball into the penalty area. Last season, 20 goals were scored from throw-in routines, and this season, that number has already climbed to 25.
"Throw-ins are underestimated," Gronnemark once said. He believes that proper coaching can significantly improve this often-overlooked aspect of the game. He pointed out that focusing on throw-ins can be crucial for smaller clubs to survive and can help top teams develop a more fluid style of play.
